Climate change is one of the most talked-about subjects in the world. But what exactly is it, why is it happening, and why does it matter? Weather is what happens today. Climate is the average pattern of weather measured over many decades. A cold day doesn’t disprove climate change, just as one hot day doesn’t prove it. The Earth naturally stays warm because its atmosphere acts like a blanket. Sunlight enters, warming the surface, while some of that heat is trapped by naturally occurring greenhouse gases. Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have burned increasing amounts of coal, oil and natural gas. This releases additional greenhouse gases, making the atmosphere more effective at trapping heat. Scientists measure climate using thousands of weather stations, satellites, ocean sensors and ice cores. Together they provide evidence of rising temperatures and changing climate patterns over many decades. A warmer planet influences many natural systems. Glaciers retreat, sea levels slowly rise, rainfall patterns shift, and some extreme weather events become more likely in certain regions. Countries, businesses and individuals are exploring many different ways to reduce emissions and adapt to changing conditions. Renewable energy, improved efficiency, new technologies and better resource management all play a role. Climate has always changed throughout Earth’s history. Today’s challenge is understanding how quickly change is occurring, what is influencing it, and how society chooses to respond. Understanding the science is the first step.
